Lameness and Limping

If your pet is exhibiting lameness or is limping, the veterinary professionals at Oakland Park Animal Hospital are ready to assist you. Immobility is a problem on its own and may also indicate a serious underlying medical concern. Our veterinarian will assess your pet’s condition to determine the underlying cause of lameness and limping and provide treatment accordingly.

Causes of Limping and Lameness

Both cats and dogs can be troubled with lameness and limping. The problem may be an injury to the soft tissues of the paw or leg. Infection or abscess may have developed that causes pain when walking. A nail injury may be making walking difficult. Older animals often suffer from arthritis, which causes pain and difficulty with mobility. In some cases, disc problems in the spinal column are the cause. Broken bones or dislocation can also cause problems when walking.

Diagnosing Lameness and Limping Problems

Our veterinarian will perform a careful physical examination to determine what is causing your pet’s lameness or limping. Muscle, bone, or nerve issues may be involved. Blood tests can rule out any systemic problems that are affecting mobility. X-rays, a CT scan, or MRI may be necessary for an accurate diagnosis. Our vet may also need to take fluid or tissue samples to examine under the microscope.

Treatments for Lameness and Limping

Appropriate treatment may include the removal of a foreign body from the affected paw or treatment of a broken nail. Paw injuries may require suturing, bandaging, or a cast. Medications may be necessary to eliminate an infection. Steroid drugs help to reduce inflammation. In some cases, surgery may be needed to correct a problem. Physical therapy can also help to resolve mobility issues.
